    What is a spread?

    Short answer

The gap between the highest price buyers will pay (bid) and the lowest price sellers will accept (ask).

    Why it matters

Wide spreads mean higher trading costs. Big, liquid stocks have tiny spreads; small stocks can have wide ones.
